Deborah's Place
Since 1985, Deborah’s Place has been providing housing and services to homeless women in Chicago. Their mission is to help residents heal from the root cause of homelessness and ultimately move past the experience. Residents have access to job readiness training, tutoring, education assistance, health services, case management, counseling, and activities related to social and life skills. After beginning as a small organization of volunteer women over 30 years ago, Deborah’s Place has assisted over 4,000 women transition from homeless to leading stable lives in their own homes.
Sammons Financial Group has supported Deborah’s Place through monetary donations and employee volunteers for over five years. One of the ways employees give their time is an annual employee volunteer event during which staff spends the morning with residents designing vision boards, working on crafts, cleaning, and gardening.
In addition to volunteers, Sammons Financial Group has provided donations to fund various projects at Deborah’s Place, including new flooring for a common room, kitchen upgrades, and developing a space for women to gather for activities. Recently, the company donated $95,000 to fund renovating a gym that is regularly used for tenant meetings, support groups, health fairs, art and music performances, memorial services for residents who have passed away, and other events. The refurbished space also includes a storage area for storing in-kind donations that residents often need when they come to the facility, including pillows, blankets, and other daily necessities. A grand opening of the updated gym was held in early April 2019.
